Division member Dr Anna Jackman (Human Geography) has received two UK drone qualifications, the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) and General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC). These qualifications enable Anna to undertake particular drone flights within the Open and Specific categories. Gaining the qualifications involved both an online theory course and exam (May 2022), and a ground flight school and exam – held at scenic Wasps FC in Acton (June 2022). Anna would like to thank her Consortiq instructors, Andy Huggett and Michael Surcombe, for their guidance and support. In the coming months, Anna is excited to hone her drone flight skills and to explore what they might mean and open up for her research. Anna is currently leading an ESRC New Investigator grant, ‘diversifying drone stories’, which explores how drones are (re)shaping UK airspace, with a focus on aerial securities and harms. More information on the UK drone qualifications can be found on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website here and here.
