Welcome families and teachers to this website, which is designed as a guide to introducing the topic of LGBTQ+ people to children. We want young people to understand and accept that people have different identities based on a range of factors, such as culture, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. Helping young people understand the principles of inclusion means we need to explore a range of diverse topics. As part of this process, we believe that children should be aware of the existence of people belonging to the LGBTQ+ community as they will come across them at some point in their lives.
This website has been created with the intention of helping parents and teachers have conversations about LGBTQ+ identities. The ideas and materials are aimed at helping all children, not just those who identify as LGBTQ+, see LGBTQ+ identities as ‘normal’. This is because we want to see we want to prevent the psychological and physical harm that many young people who identify as LGBTQ+ experience in schools and wider society.
