School-Home Learning Activities

Books can be a great way to start a conversation with your child or young person.  The following book list has suggestions for primary aged children, these could be shared together or read independently depending on the age of the individual.

Suggested follow up activities and discussion prompts

Here are some questions that might help you to explore the topics in the books with your child/ young person:

  • What did you like about the story?
  • What is the story about? What do you think the message of the story is?
  • How do you think the character is feeling?
  • How would you react if…?
  • How can you describe the character(s)?
  • Do you relate to any of the characters and/or situations?
  • Do the characters remind you of anyone you know?

Activities

  • Mind map the character’s feelings and what caused them
  • Role play (group or class)
  • Art based activities to represent a particular event
