Meteorology Taster Days

Our Taster Day Programmes are currently not running but we hope to arrange welcome visits again in the not so distant future. Please do check here again for updates.

Meteorology Taster: 2 Day Programme an exciting range of lectures, activities, discussions:

  • Tour of the Atmospheric Observatory with a live radiosonde weather balloon launch
  • Plotting data from the radiosonde on a tephigraph
  • Urban meteorology airflow exercise
  • An interactive session in the Meteorology laboratories participating in some hands on science experiments
  • Space weather lecture

Duration: 2 day non-residential  (9.30am – 4.30pm approx.) If you can’t attend on both days you are welcome to join us for just one – let us know  after registration if this is your preference.

Suitable for: Year 12/13 students studying sciences, physics or maths and are considering a physics/maths related course at University. Also open for Year 13 students. New attendees and those who have been on a one day taster are both welcomed.

Dates: Tuesday 18 February – Wednesday 19 February 2020. The taster programme is non-residential, local accommodation can be arranged by yourself, but in most cases persons under the age of 18 years old are to be accompanied by an adult in the accommodation. Meteorology Taster: 1 Day Programme covers a variety of activities such as:

  • Weather data gathering using meteorological instruments
  • Richardson’s Forecast Factory – become part of a super computer to see how weather forecasts are created
  • Fluid Labs Demonstrations – learn about the atmosphere
  • Campus Tour
  • Q&A session with teaching staff, researchers and students

Suitable for: Year 12/13 students studying sciences, physics or maths who are considering a physics/maths related course at University

Date: To be confirmed (likely to be October half-term 2020

Location: University of Reading, Earley Gate, Whiteknights Campus, Reading, RG6 7BE

Information: This programme is free of charge and limited to 40 places. The taster day is non-residential, local accommodation the night before can be arranged by yourself, but in most cases persons under the age of 18 years old are to be accompanied by an adult in the accommodation. Funding may be available in some instances for support for travel costs.
