Migration, Care, Language & Identity
We hosted an exciting workshop that explored multi-disciplinary perspectives on Migration, Care, Language and Identity at the University of Reading on 3 November 2016. The programme included keynotes from:
- Eleonore Kofman, Professor of Gender, Migration & Citizenship, Middlesex University: Immigration and Refugee Policies, Families and Care in Europe
- Jean-Marc Dewaele, Professor in Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism, Birkbeck, University of London: The linguistic, emotional and psychological challenges facing foreign language users
Presentations of research findings from Reading academic staff and from practitioners working with refugees and migrants:
- Dr. Ruth Evans: Forced Migration, Care and Family Relations, followed by a panel discussion with practitioners, including the Refugee Council and Children’s Society Include Project
- Dr. Gudbjorg Ottosdottir: Asylum seekers and refugees in South East of England: Caring relations in families and with professionals in social care and health
- Dr. Teresa Murjas: Peeling Onions with Granny: exploring legacies of deportation and displacement through film, performance and web-based platforms
- Dr. Beverley Costa: Research findings – who knows, who cares and who does anything with them?
- Dr. Tony Capstick: Language, Resilience and Ethnography

Art work produced in participatory workshops with refugees living with chronic illness and with young people from migrant backgrounds as part of Ruth Evans’ research was also exhibited.
This Participation Lab workshop was funded by the University of Reading and is a collaboration with the Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism and Global Development at Reading.
