A new report from Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) Committee details the challenges facing the British film and TV industry and makes recommendations for how to protect it. In this blog, Dominic Lees, Associate Professor in Filmmaking and Specialist Advisor to the CMS Committee, shares five ways that you can get involved and support British productions.

1) Write to your MP

The best way to make your voice heard is to write to your local MP. Express your concern about the challenges facing the British film and TV industry – you could mention specific issues like funding cuts to the British Film Institute (BFI), the need for tax incentives, and support for cinemas. MPs are responsive to constituent concerns, especially when they receive multiple messages on the same topic. You can find your MP’s contact details on the Parliament website.

2) Visit your local cinema

Cinemas are the best places to watch films and often form a vital part of our local communities, but they are struggling and many face closure. Paying a visit to your local cinema helps to keep the film projectors running and preserve these important community spaces. Reading has a fantastic cinema, so why not pop down this weekend and see a film? Or if you’re further afield, find an independent cinema near you!

3) Watch British productions

Whether it’s in cinemas, on streaming platforms, or live TV, choosing British-made films and series helps boost their visibility, ratings and revenue. Platforms like BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 and BFI Player tend to highlight British content. You can also amplify British productions by following creators on social media and sharing trailers to generate buzz.

4) Take a film or TV course

Looking to begin a career in film and TV? The University of Reading of offers exceptional facilities and a supportive learning environment. Our undergraduate and master’s courses will develop your practical and entrepreneurial skills, setting you on a path to a successful creative career.

5) Support the BFI and local film initiatives

Get involved with initiatives like Screen Berkshire, which help to develop talent and address critical skills gaps in the screen industries. You can also become a member of the BFI, which nurtures emerging talent and preserves the heritage of British cinema.

Our film and TV industry needs you

The British film and TV industry has given the world unforgettable stories and characters for decades. With your support through these simple actions, we can help this vital creative industry overcome current challenges and continue to produce world-class content.
