‘Mineral concentrations in milk: sources of variation and implications to human nutrition’, Dr Sokratis Stergiadis (Animal Sciences)
The second seminar “Mineral concentrations in milk: sources of variation and implications to human nutrition”, presented by Dr Sokratis Stergiadis, will take place via Microsoft Teams on Friday 19th March at 13.00 – 14.00.
Abstract: Liquid milk is purchased by >98% of UK households and is among the main dietary sources of certain minerals in human diets including calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iodine and magnesium. Previous work at retail level and meta-analyses has shown that production systems (mainly organic vs conventional) may influence milk mineral concentrations. This may alter intakes of the UK population for nutrients that milk is a good source for, and have nutritional implications in vulnerable groups such as toddlers, adolescents, pregnant women, and nursing mothers, due to higher requirements in certain minerals. This presentation will provide an update of the effect of production systems on milk mineral concentrations (with emphasis on iodine), and present new results from the recently completed EIT Food funded projects NMR MIRACLE and INSPIRE that compare the full mineral profile of milk from different dairy production systems and seasons, explore on-farm husbandry practices (cow diet and breed) that influence milk mineral profile and discuss the potential implications on UK consumers’ mineral intake.
