Reading Abbey at 900: Revealing Reading Abbey’s Archaeology

Reading was home to one of Europe’s greatest medieval monasteries, established in 1121 by Henry I. It has been subject to many small-scale archaeological excavations yet remains poorly understood. Archaeologist and architectural historian Tim Tatton-Brown digs deep into the archaeological archives to shed new light on the development of Reading Abbey, including the probable location of the tomb of Henry I.
Tim Tatton-Brown has published widely on the archaeology and architecture of England’s most prestigious medieval buildings. He has held the role of consultant archaeologist for Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, Lambeth Palace, St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, and several other cathedrals, as well as consultant archaeologist for the Oracle Shopping Centre re-development in Reading.
