In January 2017 the interdisciplinary research Centre for the Mathematics of Planet Earth (CMPE) began its activities at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Reading under the direction of Professor Valerio Lucarini.
The Centre originates from the outputs of the special scientific year of “Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013“, an international initiative that saw several meetings and scientific events organised around the world. In particular, the University of Reading contributed through the organisations of the scientific programme “Mathematics for the Fluid Earth” hosted at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in October-December 2013. Further activities complemented the INI programme. A selection of past training and dissemination activities can be found in the Past Activities section of this website. Furthermore, the CMPE activities were in close connection with the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training Mathematics of Planet Earth, run jointly by the Imperial College London and the University of Reading.
More recently, members of CMPE organised the inaugural INI Satellite programme Geophysical fluid dynamics; from mathematical theory to operational prediction at the University of Reading. Furthermore, CMPE staff Jochen Bröcker is Co-I on the recently successful EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training Mathematics for our Future Climate, joint with Imperial College and the University of Southampton.
In January 2024, Dr Jochen Bröcker took over as director of CMPE.
The CMPE also works in collaboration with:
