At the forefront of data assimilation research

Data assimilation is the science of combining information from computational models and observations. Data assimilation has proven to be fundamental to modern day weather forecasting and its immense potential for other applications is now widely recognised.

Applying data assimilation theory to real models and real observations is very challenging and is an area of active research. At the Data Assimilation Research Centre we perform fundamental research to increase the benefits of data assimilation. Particular areas of research are:

  • Characterising uncertainty in models and observations.
  • Developing new non-linear algorithms.
  • Applying, e.g. meteorology,  terrestrial carbon cycle, paleo-climate,  ocean biogeochemistry.
