Dr. Naomi Flynn (Associate Professor of Primary English Education, University of Reading) gave an invited keynote, titled ‘Talk Rich Teaching for EAL and For All’, at an on-line conference attended by 70 teachers on 9th February 2022.

The event was organised by Inside Government (IG) Schools, a London-based organisation that delivers training events for the public and voluntary sector. Their invitation for Dr. Flynn to give this keynote was prompted by her research into pedagogy for children learning English as an additional language (EAL) with the University of Reading’s Institute of Education, and her voluntary work with the UK charity NALDIC (National Association for Language Development in the Curriculum).

In her keynote, she drew on both her Fulbright-funded research in U.S. schools last year and her current University of Reading-funded research fellowship project (the Talk Rich Teaching project) to present the audience with research-informed advice that headlined why talk is so important in the classroom and how practice can become more talk rich.

A recording of her keynote is available here, and you can find out more about Dr. Flynn’s on-going Talk Rich Teaching project here.
