Research placements
As a world-leading research centre at the forefront of climate and weather research, we host students on research experience placements every year. (We also offer some Meteorology Taster Days for KS4/5 pupils)
Research experience placements
Each year the Department of Meteorology hosts undergraduate and postgraduate students who are interested in gaining experience in weather or climate research, either as part of their programme or as short term placements of two to three months, often over the summer period. Students are required to have a background in Maths and Physics in order to make the most of this opportunity.
Possible routes to a research placement at the Department of Meteorology include:
- ERASMUS placement scheme
- Nuffield Research Placements
- UROP (for UoR UG students)
- Space Intern Network (SpIN)
- South East Physics Network (SEPnet)
- NERC summer placements – the availability of places is dependent on NERC funding decisions and may vary from year to year
Overseas funded placements
Some countries and organisations, such as the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science JSPS and the Chinese Gi2C Group may offer funding for a placement with us.
Unfunded placements
The Department of Meteorology does not provide funding for placements, however if you are unable to obtain funding from elsewhere, it may still be possible for you to do a short term, unfunded research placement with us. Please send your CV to Nicki Robinson with a covering e-mail explaining which area of meteorology or environmental physics is of interest to you and we will be happy to advertise this to our scientists to see if any of them are able to help.
