Our project

Information design for diagnostics started as a COVID-19 Rapid Response project funded by AHRC, to respond to the needs of health sector stakeholders for user-friendly instructions for point-of-use diagnostic self tests. A cross-disciplinary team of bio scientists and information designers worked in partnership with Oxford Academic Health Sciences Network to explore effective communication routes. We produced a toolkit for manufacturers and distributors of tests, service providers, designers and content specialists who need information about producing instructional text.

New point-of-care diagnostic tests are being developed for a range of conditions , and user-friendly instructions in print and video continue to be key to accurate use of the tests. We are continuing our work to

  1. understand how the toolkit might be used in contexts beyond the focus of the initial research,
  2. assess needs for additional guidance and resources,
  3. apply our approaches to novel tests.
