The Choline Measurement Reliability Study (CHOMRS)
Are you wanting to catch up with your favourite series on Netflix, whilst contributing to science and getting cool pictures of your brain? If it’s a yes, then the CHOMRS study may be for you!
The aim of this project is to test whether a particular method of measuring choline, a neurotransmitter, is reliable.
Specifically, the study uses magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure the concentration of choline in different regions of the brain. To do this, we simply ask for participants to spend two sessions of two hours in the MRI scanner, from 9:30am-11:30am, exactly a week apart.
Importantly, because we are looking at the levels of neurotransmitters, and not of brain activity, participants are free to watch whatever they would like whilst being scanned! We provide Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Discovery Plus.
We do not pay our participants for the study, but provide images of their brain (those on the right), and are able to offer SONA credits to undergraduates.
Please read the information sheet and additional information below to determine whether you are eligible to participate.
Unfortunately, we cannot include anyone with the following:
- Currently smoking nicotinic-based products (including vapes)
- Prior or current diagnosed neurological or psychological disorder
- Currently taking psychoactive medication
- MR contraindications (e.g., pacemakers, pregnancy, claustrophobia etc.)
