In this captive account from the narratives we collected in Madagascar, this unique cartoon sheds light on the complex relationship between Madagascar and France. In this vivid exploration, we delve into the historical nuances and contemporary perceptions that shape the island’s identity. Often referred to as the “Reny malala” or beloved mother, France holds a significant place in Malagasy history, with many feeling its influence in the various conflicts that have marked the nation’s journey. Our cartoon portrays a thought-provoking perspective, where some Malagasy individuals believe that every action requires the authorization of France, reflecting the intricate dynamics at play. As tensions rise, internal conflicts arise among the Malagasy people, as it is believed that some unwittingly serve French vested interests. Â
