Abstract: Predictive power for the atmosphere on any time-scale can be associated with other, slower parts of the climate system. It can also be associated with structures or phenomena that are robust and evolve in a way that is to some extent predictable. The discussion will include thoughts on the relevance of energy cascades, chaos, Rossby wave propagation and weather regimes. Some examples of phenomena that may give predictive power will be given.
