Abstract: The Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project (S2S) was launched by World Weather Research Programme (WWRP), World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and THORPEX (The Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment) in November 2013, with the primary goals of improving forecast skill and understanding on the sub-seasonal to seasonal timescale (from 2 weeks to a season) with special emphasis on high-impact weather events. Therefore, one of the first effort of S2S project has been the establishment of a database containing near real-time and re-forecasts up to 60 days.
As per the co-operation bilateral agreement between China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in 2016. CMA continuous transmission to ECMWF the Beijing Climate Center (BCC) model-based sub-seasonal to seasonal real-time predictions. Mutual backup of two WMO S2S archive centres hosted by ECMWF and CMA respectively. The National Meteorological Information Centre (NIMC) of CMA has built the CMA S2S Data Archive Centre, is responsible to collect and archive real-time ensemble forecast and re-forecast data for all S2S data-provider centres, check the data qualities, provide online data analysis and visualization function, store data on-line and off-line, and deliver the data to users through the web-based data download services; Also produce data products such as temperature, precipitation, air pressure, wind, geopotential height anomaly and so on is in order to better serve users. Besides the BCC Climate Prediction System for S2S (BCC-CPS-S2S) of CMA, the CMA S2S Data Archive Centre, as an important participant in S2S project, also shares the Flexible Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land system version f2-V1.3 (FGOALS-f2 v1.3), which originates from Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The IAP of CAS has been officially recognized as one of the meteorological source data centers of WMO, and releases prediction data on the S2S platform, which prediction system is IAP-CAS, WMO code is 291, and abbreviated as ANSO.
The CMA S2S Data Archive center could be accessible from http://s2s.cma.cn , provide the sub-seasonal to seasonal weather forecast data to the researchers worldwide for studying the predictability on time-scales up to 60 days. Because S2S is a research project, the real-time forecasts are only available with a 3-week delay. By the end of 2022, CMA S2S Data Archive Centre has collected and archived roughly 200 TB data, 760 users originating from 57 countries, have registered at the CMA’s S2S data portal, and the total number of visits is more than 6,670,000, nearly 83.5 Terabytes of data have been downloaded from the CMA’s S2S data portal.
