Abstract: The transition of sub-seasonal prediction research to operations, including the development of associated forecast and verification products, were key aspects addressed by the WWRP/WCRP Sub-Seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) prediction project. Such transition required efforts in (a) research for testing and developing methodologies for calibration, multi-model combination, verification, and generation of forecast products, and (b) coordination with relevant WMO technical commissions to define criteria, standards and protocols for operational implementation and exchange of S2S forecasts and verification products by WMO designated Global Producing Centres for Sub-Seasonal Forecasts (GPCs-SSF), and the associated Lead Centre for Sub-Seasonal Forecast Multi-Model Ensembles (LC-SSFMME). The designation criteria for GPCs-SSF and LC-SSFMME was developed in coordination with the WMO Expert Team on Operational Climate Prediction System (ET-OCPS). Guidance on verification was provided through the Joint Working Group on Forecast Verification Research (JWGFVR). This talk will provide an overview of the research and coordination efforts performed during the lifetime of the S2S prediction project to support operational implementation of sub-seasonal forecast and verification products.
