NX Troubleshooting Guide

This guide is an overview of frequently encountered problems when connecting to nx.reading.ac.uk. It’s a continuing work in progress, so the list is not complete. Below are some common solutions. If you encounter a problem that isn’t solvable by the suggestions below, please raise a ticket to the DTS Self Service Portal.

  1. Login fails with error ‘Authentication failed, please try again’. This error most commonly happens, when you’ve mistyped (or used the wrong) password. It can also happen when you’ve entered your username as ‘xx123456@reading.ac.uk’ rather than just ‘xx123456’. Please note that adding ‘@reading.ac.uk is not required when connecting to nx.reading.ac.uk.
  2.  Login fails with error ‘The session negotiation failed. Error is: Disk quota exceeded’. This happens when your home directory is full. The connection to nx.reading.ac.uk needs a bit of free space in the home directory to be established. To clear some home directory space, you can log in to arc-ssh via command line and remove some data there, as arc-ssh will still let you in despite your home directory being full. If you’ve never logged in to arc-ssh before, have a look at the user guide.
