Explore How Farmers Produce Food Sustainably

Sustainably producing sufficient, high quality, safe and nutritious food is a major challenge for the EU and globally. Farmers and primary food producers are responsible for providing a fundamental resource for the world’s increasing population; however they face a number of challenges to ensure a stable supply. This SPOC delivers a short training course to upskill professionals working in a range of allied food industries (such as processors, distributors, retailers, insurance companies) about the diverse nature of farming systems and primary food production processes. It provides an understanding of the ways in which crop and animal food products are produced and describes the current challenges faced by farmers and producers. The recent innovations in technology and modern food production processes are also explored and case study examples describe how these improvements can increase production efficiency while limiting the impact on the environment.
