DARC social media policy
- When would I be encouraged to make a social media posting under the UniRdg_DARC Twitter/X account?
- When you want to promote a recently published piece of work, conference paper, etc (yours or another person’s).
- When you want to publicise a forthcoming event (a course, seminar, conference, open day, launch, etc).
- When you want to advertise a vacant post (a job or studentship).
- When you want to celebrate a recent achievement (a successful grant proposal, a major milestone, a PhD success, etc).
- When you want to inspire someone to enter a career in data assimilation and encourage more diversity in a maths-heavy discipline.
- When you want to highlight some of the scientific challenges that data assimilation needs to address.
- When you want to air some interesting mathematical/data assimilation fact.
- When you want to provide supporting information to a relevant current news story.
- What should I include in a post?
- Some clear and concise text.
- You may include – sparingly – @-tags (relating to people or oganisations) or #-tags (relating to topics).
- An eye-catching graphic, essentially with an alt-text description for accessibility.
- Remember that a post should serve a purpose.
- Should I post unilaterally?
- Generally no – it is difficult to retract a social media post, so all but the simplest posts should be run past a coworker to check for ill-judged statements and for scope for misinterpretation. This is also an opportunity for the wording to be improved. Items posted under the UniRdg_DARC Twitter/X account represent the University of Reading.
- What do I do if I want to include a post with a photograph of another person?
- You should seek permission from that person that they are happy for the photograph to be posted on-line.
- How do I make a post to Twitter/X under the UniRdg_DARC Twitter/X account?
- Contact a DARC member with access to the UniRdg_DARC account (Alison, Amos, Ieuan, Ross, or Sarah).
- How often can I post to Twitter/X under the UniRdg_DARC Twitter/X account?
- As a whole, the group should aim to post at least once per week.
- How do I retract a post?
- Contact a DARC member with access to the UniRdg_DARC account as soon as possible!
- What happens if my post receives abusive or threatening feedback?
- On-line abuse threats can be hurtful, damaging, and frightening, so it should be reported to Amos or Sarah.
- You may ask a DARC member with access to the UniRdg_DARC account to block or mute the offender.
- Serious offences should be escalated within the university.
