At the end of January 2024, the Transnational Families in Europe: Care, Inequalities and Wellbeing project consortium comprising researchers from the UK, Spain, Sweden and France, met for a three-day project analysis meeting at Aix-Marseille University, France.

The discussion focused on the comparative perspectives of emerging and key findings, the workshops with families and practitioners, as well as the creative methods and productions used among the four country teams. The French team presented two documentary films on transnational families from Colombia and Iraq, in the presence of the film makers following their first projection at the University Aix-Marseille in October.

The teams also presented at the monthly migration seminar organised by the MIMED French research network on migration in the Mediterranean. During the seminar, entitled Intergenerational Care across the Lifecourse in Transnational Families”, the Transnational Families in Europe  team presented two papers;

  • Berracascaring. Birth, life and death of the transnational family: a multi-sited ethnography across Colombia, Spain and France”, authored by the French and Spanish teams, and
  • Young people’s caregiving practices in transnational families: Insights from Sweden and the UK”, authored by the UK and Swedish teams.

The presentations were followed by a lively discussion with the discussants Valentina Napolitano (IRD, LPED, Aix-Marseille University)  and Francesca Sirna (CNRS, Centre Norbert Elias, EHESS) and with the audience both in person and online.

During the meeting, the project team also planned activities for the forthcoming period. These will include publications, dissemination activities and a Symposium at the University of Reading on 4th June 2024. Registration for the symposium is open until 14th May 2024.
