What is this project about?
This project investigates the development of language and reading skills in EAL children in the UK throughout the first years of primary school. We collected measures of children’s comprehnsion of vocabulary and grammar and decoding skills three times over a 12-month period to predict listening and reading comprehension performance and the children’s ability to generate inferences. Vocabulary depth and morphosyntactick skills were particulary predictive of listening comprehension and amount of English input indirectly affected the vocabulary skills children need to understand a text.
