PhD Studentships

The University of Reading has a number of PhD studentships available that applicants can apply for to begin PhD study in September 2025. For general information, please see the Doctoral and Researcher College webpages on PhD Studentships. More details for some specific calls that staff in the lab would be interested in supporting are provided below. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, so do please contact us if you are interested in applying to either the schemes below or another scheme that you may know of.

Magdalen Vernon Studentship (Deadline: December 6th, 2024)
The School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences is happy to offer the Magdalen Vernon Studentship. Open to UK and International applicants, this 3-way PhD award covers fees, provides a yearly stipend, and a Research Training Support Grant. For more information, please see the Magdalen Vernon Studentship Advert. The deadline for applications is December 6th, 2024.

SEDarc PhD Studentships (Deadline: January 6th, 2025)
The University of Reading is part of the ESRC funded SEDarc Doctoral Training Partnership which awards studentships for either PhD study, or combined MSc/PhD study involving a 1-year MSc followed by a PhD. These studentships cover fees and provides a yearly stipend and a Research Training Support Grant. These studentships are open to UK and International applicants. Please see the University’s SEDarc webpage for further information. Applicants interested in applying to Reading for a SEDarc studentship should also fill in the Expression of Interest form as soon as possible. The deadline for full applications at Reading is January 6th, 2025.

University of Reading International PhD Studentships (Deadline: January 6th, 2025)
The University of Reading also offers 4-year International PhD Studentships to International students which cover fees at the international rate, a yearly stipend and a Research Training Support Grant. The deadline for applications for the International PhD Studentship is January 6th, 2025.

Felix Scholarship (Deadline: TBC)
The Felix Scholarship is open to Indian citizens who are currently living in India and who must not have previously studied outside of India for one year or more. It covers fees and provides a yearly stipend. The 2024 competition is now closed, but information for the 2025 competition will be released in due course.

China Council Scholarship (Deadline: January 3rd, 2025)
The China Council Scholarship is open to Chinese citizens and candidates must not be working abroad at the time of application. The scholarship covers fees and provides a yearly stipend and a Research Training Support Grant. Applicants must first be offered a place for PhD study at the University of Reading, and then submit an application to the China Council Scholarship. If successful, a final funding offer will then be made to two selected candidates by the University of Reading. To be considered, applicants must apply for a PhD at Reading by January 3rd, 2025.

Regional PhD Bursaries (Deadline: May 2025, exact date TBC)
The University of Reading Regional PhD bursary covers fees at the home (UK/Republic of Ireland) rate. It is open to applicants in the UK that are eligible to pay home fees, and who wish to study on either a full-time or part-time basis. Applicants must live within 25 miles of the university and demonstrate a connection to the Reading region. The deadline will be in 2025 (exact date TBC).
