CeLM International Visiting Fellowship

The Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism (CeLM), University of Reading, is inviting international established researchers to apply for the 2026-2027 CeLM International Visiting Fellowship. This fellowship will give an international scholar the opportunity to develop a collaborative project with researchers from the Centre that will lead to a national or international grant funding application, to be submitted during or shortly after the visit. The visit should take place between September 2026-June 2027.

CeLM is an interdisciplinary research institute of University of Reading comprising over 80 researchers based in the UK and Malaysia. Our research is organised under five core Themes: Cognition & Neuroscience, Education, Health, Literacy & Literature, Migration. Our Centre also offers an active training programme and a range of public engagement activities. We are a leading, internationally renowned hub for research into linguistic, psychological, clinical and educational aspects of literacy and multilingualism. Our multi-disciplinary approach links Arts and Humanities, Life, and Social Sciences to tackle key global challenges that cannot be addressed under a single discipline.

The fellowship will support a 1-3 month stay for an international researcher intending to develop a new or existing collaboration with at least two researchers affiliated with CeLM, working under different CeLM Themes (check here for the profiles of our members). The visiting scholar will be based for the duration of the visit at our UK campus. Recommended activities for this visit include regular meetings with members of CeLM, knowledge exchange activities, contact with external partners as appropriate, delivery of seminars and training etc.

The fellowship covers expenses up to a maximum of £3,500. This can be used to support, living allowance and accommodation, economy airfare and other travel expenses and visa costs. Depending on the applicant’s visit duration and country of origin, the award may be insufficient to cover all expenses involved. The applicant will need to confirm that complementary funds are available to cover any further expenses.

APPLICATION PROCESS
The Fellowship will be awarded through a competitive selection process based on the applicant’s expertise and track record, and on the project alignment with the Centre’s
research strengths and priorities. Specifically, the application should include:

a) A 500-word research proposal (excluding references). This should specify (a) the funding scheme that will be targeted, (b) how the idea brings together two CeLM Themes, and the proposed CeLM hosts, (c) how the applicant’s expertise is complementary to CeLM and (d) a timeline for the grant submission;

b) A paragraph outlining the applicant’s projected teaching and learning responsibilities at the time of the fellowship;

c) The researcher’s CV;

d) Letters of support from the applicant’s home institution and proposed CeLM hosts;

e) If additional funds would be needed to support the visit, applicants should include a document briefly explaining how they are planning to secure those funds from other sources.

All documents should be emailed to celm@reading.ac.uk by 31/01/2026. The outcomes will be circulated to the applicants by 01/03/2027.
