The project is being run by Dr Alison Porter at the University of Southampton in collaboration with Professor Suzanne Graham and Dr Pengchong (Anthony) Zhang at the University of Reading, Institute of Education.
What is this project about?
The DELTEA project examines the role of technology in foreign language teaching and learning in the primary school, and runs from December 2022 to December 2025.
It aims to enable a step-change in foreign language teaching and learning in the primary school by investigating, in its first phase, whether digital professional development can support teacher learning and improve teacher motivation to teach primary languages. In its second phase, as part of a classroom intervention using app-based phonics and digital storytelling, DELTEA will track children’s foreign language learning (vocabulary, phonology, reading comprehension) and the development of creativity and empathy. In the final phase of the project, researchers and teacher-partners will co-create to produce a professional development Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) and evaluate teacher motivational outcomes.
